The 90 degree angle dilemma

Revisions to a breed standard are normal, usually serving to clarify vague points without causing issue. But what happens when a revision becomes problematic, and a silhouette is prioritized above all else? The Doberman was always destined to be a moderate working dog, so we must examine how we arrived at the current standard, beginning with the forequarters.

On March 10, 1942, revisions approved by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and adopted by the Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA) first introduced the requirement that the shoulder blade and upper arm meet at an angle of "at least ninety degrees and not more than one hundred and ten degrees." This initial change was not inherently problematic, as it preserved the open shoulder necessary for a working dog.

The real damage occurred with the February 9, 1948 revisions, which altered the standard to state that the shoulder blade and upper arm "should meet at an angle of ninety degrees." This rigid requirement was maintained in the October 14, 1969 revisions, which specified a 45-degree shoulder blade angle to the ground meeting the upper arm at a 90-degree angle.

Since 1948, breeders have chased an anatomical impossibility: a ninety-degree shoulder paired with upright pasterns. While a ninety-degree angle provides stability in stationary architecture, applying it to a working animal creates severe over-angulation. This alters weight distribution, overloads the front structure, and increases joint instability. Comparative anatomy and functional movement studies show that efficient working dogs typically operate with more open angles of 110 to 120 degrees to absorb impact and reduce stress during endurance movement. This is precisely why the FCI written standard allows for a more open 100-degree shoulder.

The phrase "form follows function" only holds true if function is not suffocated by angles meant for stationary structures. The ninety-degree angle has been proven anatomically impossible for decades, yet the standards persist. Written without scientific backing, the pursuit of this angle has consistently harmed the breed.

Today, we see dogs with a "beautiful shoulder lay back" that actually possess an upright neck and a vertical, short upper arm. Chasing this standard has rotated the entire joint structure, forcing front legs to sit forward of the point of the shoulder—a defect often hidden by extravagant forechests and massive keels. Combined with super straight pasterns and rears with very long second thighs, the dog's center of gravity is pushed too far forward. These dogs are forced to land heavy chests on straight upper arms, straight pasterns, and overly tight cat feet.

Since 1948, the conformation fancy has prized aesthetics over function at the expense of the Doberman, while continuing to claim the title of preservation breeders.
